Collection: Juli About
The discovery of porcelain, in his own words, "is a happy coincidence" , since at the beginning Juli was trained simultaneously in the plastic arts and the performing arts (theatre), with a stint in contemporary jewelry, and it was the latter that first introduced him to pottery.
Ceramic will become essential for Juli: “Working with ceramic means dealing with the inherent fragility of the material, but also with the fragility of our being in the world. It is a material that must be taken care of, and that invites us to take care of the world”.
Today she is an accomplished ceramic artist and especially likes to play with contrasts. White ceramic is often perceived as hard, stable and immovable. Well, under Juli's hands, ceramics suddenly become fluid, flexible, changeable and flexible. It has texture, it has volume, and we want to touch it to see if it's really smooth or not.
Juli uses ceramic with a small percentage of paper, which allows her to create solid sculptures. For example, in the exhibition "This is not a chair", he made ceramic cushions for chairs. But, under her expert hands, ceramics can also be turned into hearts, hands, feet, underwear and so many different objects, all embellished with meticulous and beautiful details.
Juli also works with voice, performance and video in installations where the experience of the body is central.
